A classic Neo-Impressionist study of light and colour, featuring hay ricks in a Normandy field rendered through the precise technique of Pointillism.
Charles Angrand was a central figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement, known for his rigorous application of colour theory and divisionist techniques. In this work, he depicts the rural landscape of Normandy through a series of distinct, chromatic marks. Rather than blending pigments on the palette, Angrand places small touches of pure colour side by side on the canvas, allowing the viewer's eye to perform the optical mixture at a distance.
The composition focuses on the rhythmic placement of hay ricks across a field. The light is captured through a systematic arrangement of yellow, gold, and ochre tones, contrasted against cooler shadows rendered in violet and blue. This approach to light and shadow demonstrates the artist's interest in the scientific principles of optics, which were a primary concern for the circle of artists around Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
Angrand's brushwork in this piece is deliberate and methodical. The surface of the canvas possesses a textured quality, as the accumulation of individual dots creates a sense of atmospheric depth. The horizon line is kept low, which allows the expansive field to dominate the visual field. This work captures the quiet, repetitive nature of agricultural life in northern France, stripped of narrative detail and focused entirely on the interaction of light and surface. By reducing the subject to its essential chromatic components, Angrand creates a study of luminosity that remains consistent with the broader objectives of the Pointillist school during the late nineteenth century.
