A traditional Japanese screen painting featuring hawks, pine trees, and camellias, executed in ink and colour on paper.
This work by Mitani Tōshuku belongs to the tradition of Japanese bird-and-flower painting, known as kachō-ga. The composition features hawks perched within the boughs of a pine tree, set against a background of camellias. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on ink washes to define the texture of the pine bark and the plumage of the birds. The use of negative space is characteristic of the period, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the avian subjects and the flora.
The pine tree, a symbol of longevity and resilience in Japanese culture, dominates the upper portion of the screen. Its branches extend across the panels, creating a sense of movement that guides the eye. Below, the camellias provide a contrast in form and scale. The hawks, rendered with precision, occupy the middle ground, their gaze directed away from the viewer, which adds a sense of naturalistic detachment to the scene. The application of colour is restrained, focusing on the subtle greens of the pine needles and the white of the camellia blossoms.
Mitani Tōshuku was active during the Edo period, a time when the Kano school and its stylistic descendants exerted significant influence over Japanese art. This piece reflects the technical requirements of screen painting, where the artist must balance decorative appeal with the structural constraints of the folding panels. The work demonstrates a mastery of brushwork, particularly in the depiction of the pine needles and the soft feathers of the hawks. The composition is balanced, avoiding overcrowding while maintaining a sense of fullness. It is a representative example of the aesthetic values prevalent in the seventeenth-century Japanese decorative arts, where nature is observed with both scientific curiosity and poetic intent.
