A traditional Chinese hanging scroll depicting a hawk perched on a pine branch, accompanied by plum blossoms and rock, executed in ink and colour on paper.
This hanging scroll by Zhu Cheng, a painter active during the late Qing Dynasty, demonstrates the traditional Chinese bird-and-flower genre. The composition features a hawk perched upon a gnarled pine branch, positioned above a rock formation and flowering plum blossoms. The hawk is rendered with controlled, precise brushwork, capturing the texture of its feathers and its alert posture. The pine tree, a symbol of longevity and resilience, is depicted with dark, dry ink strokes that contrast with the softer, more fluid application of colour on the plum blossoms.
Zhu Cheng employs a vertical format typical of traditional scroll painting. The negative space, or void, is used to balance the density of the ink-heavy pine and the solid form of the rock. The plum blossoms, painted in a muted red, provide a subtle chromatic shift against the monochrome tones of the ink. The artist includes a calligraphic inscription in the upper right, which provides context for the work and identifies the date of creation as 1873. The seals at the bottom and top right confirm the authorship and provenance of the piece.
In this work, the artist balances technical precision with the expressive qualities of ink wash. The rock is treated with light washes that suggest mass and volume without relying on heavy outlines. The pine needles are executed with sharp, rhythmic strokes, creating a sense of movement. This piece reflects the academic traditions of the period, where the study of nature served as a vehicle for personal expression and moral reflection. The combination of the hawk, pine, and plum is a classic motif, representing strength, endurance, and the arrival of spring. The work remains a clear example of the literati style, prioritising the quality of the brushstroke and the harmony of the overall composition.
