A 1909 tall tale postcard by William H. Martin, featuring a surreal, exaggerated harvest of giant onions in Nebraska.
William H. Martin, a photographer based in Ottawa, Kansas, gained notoriety during the early twentieth century for his series of tall tale postcards. These images utilised double exposure and composite printing techniques to create humorous, impossible scenes. This specific work, dated 1909, depicts a harvest of onions that have been exaggerated to the size of boulders.
The composition shows labourers struggling to load these oversized vegetables onto a horse-drawn wagon, while others are stacked in a precarious pile. By manipulating the scale of the onions against the human figures and the team of horses, Martin created a visual gag that played upon the American fascination with the bounty of the Great Plains. Such postcards were popular souvenirs, often sent to friends and family to boast about the agricultural productivity of the region in a lighthearted, absurd manner.
Technically, the print demonstrates the limitations and creative possibilities of early twentieth-century darkroom manipulation. The edges of the onions show the tell-tale signs of manual masking and collage, which were necessary to blend the disparate elements into a single frame. The sepia tone is characteristic of the period, providing a nostalgic quality that contrasts with the surreal nature of the subject matter. Martin was a prolific producer of these postcards, and his work remains a curious example of early American folk humour and photographic experimentation. This print captures a moment where rural life was transformed into a spectacle of impossible proportions, reflecting a specific cultural moment in the history of the American Midwest.
