Gino Severini, a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, frequently returned to the subject of the commedia dell'arte throughout his career. This lithograph depicts two harlequin figures, a recurring motif that allowed the artist to explore geometric abstraction while maintaining a connection to theatrical tradition. The composition is structured through a series of interlocking planes, which break down the figures into angular, rhythmic forms.

Severini employs a controlled palette of blue, pink, brown, and black to define the spatial relationships between the musicians and their instruments. The accordion held by the figure on the left serves as a central anchor, its bellows rendered as a sequence of sharp, repeating triangles.
