A sixteenth-century natural history illustration of a mullet from Adriaen Coenen's Visboeck, featuring delicate watercolour and ink work.
This illustration of a mullet, known in Dutch as a 'harder', originates from the Visboeck (Fish Book), a manuscript compiled by the Dutch fisherman and amateur naturalist Adriaen Coenen. Created in 1584, the work reflects the sixteenth-century interest in documenting the natural world, particularly the marine life found along the coast of the Netherlands. Coenen spent decades observing and recording various species, combining his practical knowledge as a fisherman with a desire to catalogue the diversity of the sea.
The image presents the fish in a clear, side-on profile, a standard approach for scientific documentation of the period. The artist employs a delicate application of watercolour to define the scales and the structure of the fins, while the ink outlines provide a firm boundary for the form. Beneath the fish, a scroll contains a contemporary inscription in Dutch, which identifies the subject and provides the date of the observation. The background is rendered with simple, rhythmic lines to suggest the movement of water, keeping the focus entirely on the specimen itself.
Coenen's work is notable for its blend of empirical observation and decorative presentation. While the proportions of the fish are stylised, the attention to detail regarding the gill covers and the arrangement of the fins demonstrates a genuine attempt at biological accuracy. The inclusion of the scroll adds a formal, archival quality to the page, typical of Renaissance manuscripts that sought to organise knowledge through both text and image. This print offers a glimpse into the early modern approach to natural history, where the boundaries between scientific study and artistic expression remained fluid. It is a piece that appeals to those interested in the history of science, maritime culture, and the development of early biological illustration.
