Beskrivning
A characteristic maritime scene by the self-taught Cornish artist Alfred Wallis, featuring his signature flattened perspective and raw, expressive style.
Alfred Wallis, a former Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties. He possessed no formal training, yet his work captures the essence of maritime life with a directness that appealed to the St Ives modernists who discovered him. This piece, Harbour and Sailing Ship, demonstrates his characteristic approach to perspective and material.
Wallis frequently utilised scavenged materials, often painting on irregular pieces of cardboard or wooden boxes. His compositions ignore traditional vanishing points, favouring a map-like arrangement where objects are sized according to their importance to the narrative rather than their distance from the viewer. The harbour walls, the lighthouse, and the vessel are placed to create a sense of space that feels both immediate and dreamlike. He applied paint thinly, often allowing the texture of the cardboard to remain visible, which adds to the raw quality of the work.
His palette is restricted, relying on muted tones of white, grey, and dark green to define the water and the structures. The stark contrast between the dark, simplified shapes of the ship and the pale, expansive surface of the harbour creates a clear visual rhythm. Wallis did not seek to replicate the appearance of the sea, but rather to record his memory of it. His work remains a singular example of self-taught expression, unburdened by the conventions of the art schools of his time. By focusing on the essential forms of the boats and the coastal architecture, he provides a view of the Cornish coast that is both personal and evocative. This print captures the tactile nature of the original, preserving the humble materials and the honest, unrefined application of paint that define his unique contribution to British art.
