A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting the coastal scenery and pine trees of Hamamatsu from his Vertical Tokaido series.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige is the thirtieth plate from the series Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations, often referred to as the Vertical Tokaido. Produced in 1855, this series offers a different perspective on the route between Edo and Kyoto compared to his earlier, more famous horizontal series. The composition focuses on the coastal area of Hamamatsu, a location celebrated for its pine trees and the sound of the wind moving through them.
Hiroshige employs a vertical format to emphasise the scale of the gnarled pine trees that frame the scene. The foreground features twisted trunks with detailed needle clusters, while the middle ground shows a group of travellers resting on the sandy shore. The sea stretches towards the horizon, where a distant headland is visible under a sky marked by a small flock of birds. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft blues for the water and earthy tones for the sand and tree trunks, which allows the viewer to focus on the atmospheric quality of the coastal setting.
The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige. The subtle gradations in the sky and the crisp lines of the pine needles reflect the high standards of mid-nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking. By choosing to depict the famous murmuring pines, Hiroshige connects the viewer to a specific cultural site, capturing the quiet observation of nature that defines much of his later work. This piece provides a clear example of the artist's ability to balance human activity with the natural environment, creating a sense of place that remains accessible to the modern observer.
