A refined 1781 portrait by Charles-Nicolas Cochin, capturing a seated woman in period attire with precise graphite and chalk technique.
Charles-Nicolas Cochin was a central figure in the French art world during the eighteenth century, serving as a draughtsman, engraver, and critic. This portrait, executed in 1781, displays the technical precision and restraint that defined his later career. Cochin moved away from the more exuberant excesses of the early Rococo period, favouring a clarity of line and a balanced approach to form.
The subject is depicted in a half-length pose, seated and turned slightly towards the viewer. Her attire reflects the fashion of the late eighteenth century, featuring a high, elaborate hairstyle adorned with a ruffled cap and a bodice finished with a prominent, layered ruff. The artist employs delicate hatching and cross-hatching to model the volume of the figure and the texture of the fabric. The light source is subtle, creating soft shadows that define the contours of the face and the folds of the clothing without resorting to heavy contrast.
Cochin’s ability to capture the likeness of his sitter while maintaining a sense of composure is evident here. The work is signed and dated at the bottom, a common practice for the artist, who maintained a rigorous professional standard throughout his tenure at the Académie Royale. This drawing provides a clear view into the aesthetic preferences of the French elite during the final decade of the Ancien Régime. The composition is contained and orderly, focusing the viewer's attention on the sitter's expression and the fine details of her costume. As a fine art print, this piece retains the nuanced tonal qualities of the original graphite and chalk medium, offering a refined addition to any collection focused on historical portraiture or eighteenth-century French draughtsmanship.
