A Neoclassical depiction of the biblical scene where an angel provides guidance to Hagar and her son Ishmael in the wilderness.
Benjamin West, an American painter who spent much of his career in London, produced this work in 1776. The painting depicts a scene from the Book of Genesis, where Hagar and her son Ishmael are cast into the wilderness. An angel appears from the clouds to offer divine guidance and comfort to the distressed pair. West employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, typical of his Neoclassical training, to direct the viewer's attention toward the interaction between the celestial figure and the earthly subjects.
Hagar is shown seated, cradling the exhausted Ishmael. Her gaze is directed upward toward the angel, who points toward a source of water, symbolising salvation. The composition relies on a triangular arrangement, providing stability to the emotional narrative. West uses a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the deep red of Hagar's garment and the cool blue of the angel's robes. The background remains dark and indistinct, which serves to isolate the figures and heighten the sense of isolation inherent in the biblical narrative.
West was a significant figure in the Royal Academy of Arts, and his work often explored themes of morality and history. This particular piece demonstrates his ability to translate complex theological narratives into accessible visual language. The brushwork is precise, allowing for the soft rendering of skin tones and the flowing drapery of the garments. The painting remains a clear example of the late eighteenth-century approach to religious iconography, where human emotion is balanced with classical restraint. The work is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, reflecting its status within the canon of Western art history.
