A striking woodcut portrait of the Prince of Wales by William Nicholson, featuring bold silhouettes and a minimalist aesthetic.
This portrait of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, originates from the 1899 portfolio titled Twelve Portraits. William Nicholson employed a distinct woodcut technique for this series, utilising bold areas of flat colour and stark silhouettes to define his subjects. The composition relies on a limited palette, where the dark form of the Prince stands against a muted, ochre background. This approach strips away unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the recognisable posture and features of the sitter.
Nicholson was a master of the graphic arts during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. His work often shows the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, particularly in the economy of line and the balance of positive and negative space. By reducing the image to its essential components, he captures a sense of character that more elaborate academic portraits often miss. The Prince is depicted with a bowler hat in hand, presenting a figure of authority that remains grounded and accessible.
This print is a fine example of the graphic style that defined Nicholson's early career. The heavy black ink provides a strong contrast to the paper tone, creating a graphic weight that is characteristic of his work for the Beggarstaff Brothers and his subsequent solo projects. The simplicity of the execution allows the viewer to observe the subtle variations in the block-printing process, which adds texture to the flat colour fields. It is a direct, honest representation of a public figure, rendered with the technical precision that earned Nicholson his reputation as a leading printmaker of his time.
