A detailed stipple engraving of the French revolutionary Comte de Mirabeau, published in London in 1793 by Franz Gabriel Fiessinger.
This stipple engraving depicts Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Comte de Mirabeau, a figure of the French Revolution. Executed by the German engraver Franz Gabriel Fiessinger, the work reflects the technical precision common in late eighteenth-century printmaking. The portrait is presented within an oval frame, a standard format for commemorative prints of the period, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject's facial features and expression.
Fiessinger utilised the stipple technique, which involves creating tonal variations through a series of small dots rather than continuous lines. This method allowed for a soft, painterly quality that was highly sought after for portraiture. The subject is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the attire of the era, including a cravat and a coat with a high collar. The inscription at the base confirms the publication details, noting that it was published in London in February 1793. This specific date is significant, as it follows the death of Mirabeau in 1791 and occurs during the height of the revolutionary period in France.
The print demonstrates the circulation of political imagery across European borders during the late eighteenth century. Fiessinger, who spent time working in London, contributed to the dissemination of portraits of revolutionary figures to an international audience. The blue-toned background provides a contrast to the monochromatic portrait, a stylistic choice that adds a distinct visual character to the piece. The work remains a clear example of the intersection between political history and the graphic arts, capturing the likeness of a man whose influence on the early stages of the French Revolution was considerable. The clarity of the engraving ensures that the subject's features remain distinct, providing a record of his appearance as it was understood by his contemporaries.
