A 1920 Purist still life by Le Corbusier, featuring a guitar rendered through precise, geometric forms and a restrained, muted colour palette.
Le Corbusier, primarily known for his architectural contributions, was also a painter who co-founded the Purist movement with Amédée Ozenfant. This work, Guitare verticale (2ème version), dates to 1920, a period when the artist sought to strip away the decorative excesses of late Cubism in favour of clear, mathematical order and universal forms. The composition reflects the Purist aesthetic, which prioritised the representation of everyday objects through a lens of geometric precision and clarity.
The painting features a guitar, a recurring subject in the artist's oeuvre, rendered here as a series of flattened, interlocking planes. The forms are reduced to their essential components, creating a dialogue between the object and the space it occupies. The palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of grey, cream, and subtle red to maintain focus on the structural arrangement rather than atmospheric effects. By avoiding the fragmentation typical of earlier Cubist works, Le Corbusier presents a stable, harmonious image that aligns with his broader architectural philosophy of functionalism and rational design.
In this piece, the guitar is not merely a musical instrument but a vehicle for exploring spatial relationships. The vertical orientation of the guitar body contrasts with the horizontal planes of the table surface, creating a balanced tension within the frame. The application of paint is smooth and deliberate, reinforcing the sense of control and objectivity that defines the Purist approach. This work provides a clear view into the artist's methodology, where the principles of proportion and geometry are applied to the canvas with the same rigour as in his building designs. It is an example of the intellectual rigour that characterised the Parisian avant-garde during the post-war period, focusing on the clarity of form and the integrity of the picture plane.
