A formal seventeenth-century engraving by Nicolas de Poilly, depicting the lawyer Guillelmus Menagius within a classical oval frame.
This engraving by Nicolas de Poilly depicts the French lawyer and scholar Guillelmus Menagius. The work follows the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture, presenting the subject within a formal oval frame. The composition is balanced, with the sitter positioned in a three-quarter view, wearing the traditional robes and collar associated with his legal profession. The precision of the line work demonstrates the technical skill required for copperplate engraving during this period.
Below the portrait, a plinth supports the frame, decorated with a coat of arms and a Latin inscription. This inclusion of heraldry and text serves to identify the subject and provide a brief eulogy, a common practice in commemorative prints of the era. The shading is achieved through a system of cross-hatching, which creates volume in the drapery of the clothing and depth in the facial features. The artist, Nicolas de Poilly, was a member of a family of engravers active in Paris, known for their contributions to the documentation of contemporary figures.
The print is based on an original painting by Claude Lagot, as indicated by the credit 'Claud. Lagorius pinxit' at the base of the frame. This collaborative process, where an engraver translated a painted portrait into a reproducible medium, allowed for the wider circulation of likenesses of prominent individuals. The clarity of the engraving ensures that the character of the sitter remains legible, capturing a sense of gravity and intellectual focus. This piece provides a clear example of the formal portrait style prevalent in France during the mid-seventeenth century, reflecting the social and professional hierarchies of the time.
