Guernica is a large-scale oil painting created by Pablo Picasso in 1937. The work responds to the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso employs a monochromatic palette of grey, black, and white to convey the stark reality of the event. The composition is crowded with figures, including a bull, a horse, and various human forms, all rendered in a fragmented, cubist style that distorts physical space to express psychological trauma.

The painting lacks traditional perspective, opting for a flat, mural-like arrangement that forces the viewer to confront the chaos of the scene. Picasso uses sharp, angular lines to define the suffering figures, while the central horse and the bull remain the most recognisable motifs. The light source, depicted as an eye-like bulb at the top of the canvas, casts a cold, clinical illumination over the carnage below. By stripping away colour, the artist focuses attention on the geometry of the forms and the raw emotion of the subjects.

Commissioned for the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris International Exposition, the painting travelled extensively before finding a permanent home in Madrid. It remains a primary example of political art in the twentieth century. The work avoids literal depiction, choosing instead to use symbolic imagery to communicate the universal experience of conflict. The figures are arranged in a way that suggests a theatre stage, with the action unfolding across a wide, horizontal plane. This composition allows for multiple narratives to exist simultaneously, from the mother mourning her child on the left to the figure trapped in fire on the right. The lack of colour serves to unify these disparate elements into a singular, cohesive statement on the nature of violence.
