Painted in 1909, Grungasse in Murnau captures the Bavarian village where Wassily Kandinsky spent significant time during his formative years. This period marks a shift in his practice, as he moved away from traditional representational techniques towards a more subjective interpretation of form and colour. The composition focuses on the architecture of the street, yet the physical structures are secondary to the application of paint and the arrangement of chromatic planes.

Kandinsky employs bold, non-naturalistic hues to define the buildings and the street surface. The yellow facade of the primary house contrasts with the deep blues and shadows that populate the scene. His brushwork is deliberate and heavy, creating a sense of texture that flattens the pictorial space. Rather than attempting to replicate the precise geometry of the village, he prioritises the emotional resonance of the scene. The shadows cast across the foreground are simplified into dark, angular shapes, which anchor the composition while simultaneously pushing the viewer to look past the literal subject matter.
