A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Domenico Bernardo Zilotti, depicting soldiers gathered near a stone ruin, based on a design by Francesco Simonini.
This etching by Domenico Bernardo Zilotti captures a military scene set against the backdrop of crumbling fortifications. The composition features a group of soldiers, some mounted on horseback and others standing in conversation, positioned near the base of a weathered stone structure. Zilotti, a Venetian printmaker, demonstrates a precise command of line work, using varied hatching to define the textures of the soldiers' uniforms, the rough masonry of the ruin, and the distant, hazy mountains.
The work is based on a design by Francesco Simonini, a painter known for his depictions of cavalry and military life. The collaboration between the painter and the etcher was common in eighteenth-century Venice, where printmakers often reproduced the works of contemporary painters to reach a wider audience. The scene conveys a sense of quiet observation rather than active conflict, focusing on the human element within a historical or architectural setting. The figures are rendered with a lightness typical of the period, while the ruin provides a sense of scale and temporal depth.
Zilotti's technique relies on delicate, rhythmic lines to create form and shadow. The open space on the left side of the print balances the density of the figures and the architecture on the right. The inclusion of the inscription at the bottom, noting the collaboration with Simonini and the Venetian origin, provides context for the production of such prints during the mid-eighteenth century. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the era, where military subjects were frequently treated with a decorative and observational approach. The print remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in Venetian etching, where the interplay of light and shadow is achieved through careful layering of lines rather than tonal washes.
