John French Sloan, a member of the Ashcan School, is often associated with his depictions of urban life in New York. However, his summer visits to Gloucester, Massachusetts, provided a different subject matter. This work captures the coastal terrain with a focus on the tactile quality of the dune grasses. The composition is divided between the immediate foreground of wind-swept vegetation and the distant, calm horizon of the Atlantic Ocean.

Sloan employs a palette dominated by yellow-green tones to render the grasses, which occupy the lower two-thirds of the frame. The brushwork is loose and directional, suggesting the movement of the breeze across the dunes. To the left, rocky outcrops provide a contrast in texture and colour, while the distant lighthouse serves as a small, vertical anchor against the expansive sky and sea.
