A coastal scene by John French Sloan, capturing the wind-swept grasses and calm horizon of Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1914.
John French Sloan, a member of the Ashcan School, is often associated with his depictions of urban life in New York. However, his summer visits to Gloucester, Massachusetts, provided a different subject matter. This work captures the coastal terrain with a focus on the tactile quality of the dune grasses. The composition is divided between the immediate foreground of wind-swept vegetation and the distant, calm horizon of the Atlantic Ocean.
Sloan employs a palette dominated by yellow-green tones to render the grasses, which occupy the lower two-thirds of the frame. The brushwork is loose and directional, suggesting the movement of the breeze across the dunes. To the left, rocky outcrops provide a contrast in texture and colour, while the distant lighthouse serves as a small, vertical anchor against the expansive sky and sea. The light appears soft, typical of a coastal afternoon, and the lack of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the natural environment.
Unlike his more famous urban scenes, which often feature crowded streets and social interaction, this painting demonstrates Sloan's ability to observe the natural world with similar directness. The application of paint is confident, avoiding unnecessary detail in favour of capturing the atmosphere of the Gloucester coast. The work reflects the artist's interest in the specific light and topography of the New England shoreline during the early twentieth century. It remains a clear example of his plein air practice, where the artist sought to record the immediate visual experience of a location. The painting is held in the collection of the Delaware Art Museum, which houses a significant portion of Sloan's work.
