A refined study of a grasshopper on a gourd vine, rendered in lacquer on paper by the master artist Shibata Zeshin.
Shibata Zeshin was a master of both lacquerware and painting, known for his ability to bridge traditional Japanese aesthetics with a keen observation of the natural world. This work belongs to a series of lacquer paintings that demonstrate his technical command over urushi, a medium typically reserved for decorative objects rather than two-dimensional compositions. By applying lacquer to paper, Zeshin achieved a unique texture and depth that distinguishes his work from standard ink or watercolour paintings of the period.
The composition features a grasshopper perched upon a slender, winding gourd vine. The subject matter aligns with the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on birds and flowers, or more broadly, the observation of flora and fauna. Zeshin employs a minimalist approach, allowing the negative space of the paper to balance the organic forms of the vine and the insect. The green tones of the gourd and leaves are rendered with subtle gradients, while the grasshopper is depicted with precise, fine lines that capture its anatomical structure. The inclusion of a single white blossom provides a point of contrast, drawing the eye across the frame.
Zeshin’s work is characterised by a restraint that avoids unnecessary ornamentation. His background as a lacquer artist informs his sense of composition, where every element is placed with deliberate intent. The use of gold-leaf borders, common in traditional Japanese mounting, frames the scene and adds a sense of formality to the naturalistic subject. This piece reflects the artist's interest in the quiet, often overlooked details of nature, presented with a level of technical refinement that remains a hallmark of his career. The work invites close inspection, rewarding the viewer with its clarity and the understated elegance of its execution.
