A striking 1928 wood engraving by Clare Leighton, depicting the rhythmic labour of a grape harvest with high-contrast graphic precision.
Clare Leighton, a master of the wood engraving medium, produced this work in 1928. The composition captures the physical labour of the harvest, focusing on the rhythmic movements of workers as they gather and process grapes. Leighton employs a high-contrast aesthetic, using the stark opposition between black ink and the white paper to define form and volume. Her technique relies on precise, controlled lines to suggest texture, from the woven baskets to the rough surfaces of the wooden vats.
The scene is constructed with a clear sense of order. Figures are arranged across the foreground, their postures reflecting the repetitive nature of their task. A woman stands with a basket balanced on her head, while others bend over containers, creating a series of arcs that guide the viewer across the frame. In the background, a small village sits atop a hill, providing a sense of place and scale without distracting from the primary activity of the workers.
Leighton was known for her interest in rural life and the dignity of manual labour. This print demonstrates her ability to elevate everyday agricultural scenes through technical rigour and balanced composition. The absence of extraneous detail allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the figures and their environment. As a practitioner of the wood engraving revival in the early twentieth century, Leighton utilised the medium to create works that possess both graphic clarity and emotional weight. This piece remains a representative example of her technical skill and her thematic focus on the relationship between humanity and the land.
