The series examines the effects of light, atmosphere, and weather on a single subject over different times of day and seasons. In this particular composition, the grainstack is partially obscured by a soft, morning mist, which diffuses the light and softens the edges of the form.

Monet employs a palette of muted pinks, mauves, and pale yellows to capture the fleeting quality of the early morning sun. The brushwork is characteristic of his mature style, consisting of short, broken strokes that build up the surface texture of the canvas. Rather than focusing on the physical structure of the grainstack, the artist prioritises the optical experience of colour and light. The foreground is rendered with dabs of paint that suggest the texture of the field, while the background dissolves into a hazy, atmospheric wash.
