A precise Neoclassical etching by Daniël Vrijdag depicting the funerary monument of the anatomist Petrus Camper.
This etching by Daniël Vrijdag depicts the funerary monument dedicated to the Dutch physician and anatomist Petrus Camper. The composition is defined by a strict, symmetrical arrangement, characteristic of the Neoclassical period. At the centre sits a portrait bust of Camper, positioned atop a pedestal that features a draped cloth motif. The entire structure is housed within a recessed arch, which provides a sense of depth through the use of fine, parallel hatching lines.
Vrijdag employs a precise engraving technique to render the textures of stone and fabric. The shading within the niche creates a subtle contrast, drawing the eye toward the bust. The monument itself is austere, reflecting the rationalist aesthetic prevalent in late eighteenth-century Dutch commemorative art. The blank plaque on the base suggests a space intended for an inscription, typical of memorial prints produced during this era to honour public figures.
Daniël Vrijdag was a Dutch engraver known for his technical proficiency in reproducing sculptural forms and architectural subjects. His work often focused on the documentation of monuments and portraits, providing a clear, objective record of the subjects. This print demonstrates his ability to translate three-dimensional stone forms into a two-dimensional medium using controlled line work. The absence of excessive ornamentation allows the viewer to focus on the form of the bust and the architectural geometry of the pedestal. This piece is a representative example of the graphic arts in the Netherlands at the turn of the nineteenth century, where clarity and structural integrity were prioritised over decorative flourish.
