A detailed ink and wash drawing by Pieter de Bevere, depicting Governor Loten and his party navigating the Negombo Lagoon in Sri Lanka during the mid-eighteenth century.
This work by Pieter de Bevere depicts a scene on the Negombo Lagoon in Sri Lanka, then known as Ceylon. The composition captures Governor Joan Gideon Loten and his party during their travels across the water. De Bevere, who served as a clerk and later a draughtsman for the Dutch East India Company, produced numerous records of the local geography and customs during his time in the region.
The drawing employs a monochromatic palette, utilising ink and wash to define the expansive water and the distant, low-lying shoreline. The central focus is a small flotilla of boats, including a larger vessel flying the Dutch flag, surrounded by smaller local craft. The figures are rendered with precise, delicate strokes, reflecting the artist's role as a documentarian of colonial administration and exploration. The calm surface of the water is suggested through subtle tonal gradations, while the sky remains largely empty, allowing the viewer to focus on the activity of the boats.
As a piece of historical documentation, the drawing provides insight into the interactions between Dutch colonial officials and the local environment. De Bevere's style is characteristic of eighteenth-century topographical art, which prioritised clarity and accuracy over atmospheric effects. The work is part of a broader collection of drawings that served to inform those in the Netherlands about the nature of their overseas territories. The composition is balanced, with the boats arranged to guide the eye across the lagoon towards the tree-lined horizon. This print offers a clear view of the maritime transport methods used in the mid-eighteenth century, capturing a specific moment of colonial travel in a region defined by its complex network of waterways.
