A classic Neo-Impressionist coastal scene by Paul Signac, featuring the luminous waters of Golfe Juan rendered in his signature divisionist style.
Paul Signac, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, painted Golfe Juan in 1896. This work demonstrates his application of the divisionist technique, where small, distinct dots of colour are placed side by side on the canvas. Rather than mixing pigments on the palette, Signac relies on the viewer's eye to optically blend these hues, creating a luminosity that characterises his Mediterranean subjects.
The composition frames the coastal view through two prominent pine trees, which act as natural curtains. The left tree stands vertically, while the right tree leans into the frame, its roots exposed against the ochre-toned bank. Between these elements, the calm waters of the Golfe Juan stretch toward the horizon. Sailboats are visible on the water, rendered with the same methodical application of colour as the sky and foliage. The distant shoreline is suggested through soft, hazy forms, maintaining the atmospheric quality of the scene.
Signac moved away from the scientific rigidity of Georges Seurat, opting for larger, more mosaic-like brushstrokes. This shift allowed for greater freedom in expressing the warmth and light of the French Riviera. The palette is dominated by warm pinks, oranges, and yellows in the sky and earth, contrasted against the cool blues and purples of the shadows and water. This balance of complementary colours creates a sense of harmony and stillness. The painting captures the specific quality of light found in the south of France, a region that became a primary focus for Signac throughout his career. His interest in the interplay between colour and light remains evident in the way the water reflects the sky, blurring the boundary between the two. This print reproduces the texture of the original oil application, allowing for a close examination of the artist's systematic approach to colour theory and composition.

Artist Biography
Paul Signac
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
