This mezzotint, titled Going into the Port of Flushing, captures a maritime scene defined by the dramatic interplay of light and shadow characteristic of the medium. The composition centres on a vessel navigating choppy waters as it approaches a fortified harbour entrance. A stone tower stands guard on the pier, while smaller boats are visible near the shoreline. Richard Purcell, an Irish engraver active in London during the mid-eighteenth century, produced this work using the mezzotint technique. This method involves roughening a metal plate to create a dark base, then scraping away areas to reveal lighter tones. The result is a soft, tonal quality that allows for subtle gradations between the deep blacks of the stormy sky and the bright highlights on the cresting waves. The print was published by Robert Sayer, a prominent map and print seller based at the Golden Buck near Serjeants Inn, Fleet Street, which was a hub for the print trade in London at the time.
