A classic chromolithograph of the goddess Kamalatmika, produced in early twentieth-century Calcutta by The Hindu Art Studio.
This chromolithograph depicts the Hindu goddess Kamalatmika, the final of the ten Mahavidyas. Produced by The Hindu Art Studio, based at 27 College Street, Calcutta, the work reflects the popularisation of religious imagery through mass-produced print media in early twentieth-century India. The aesthetic combines traditional iconographic elements with the stylistic conventions of Western academic realism, a common feature of the period's commercial devotional art.
Kamalatmika is shown seated upon a large, pink lotus flower, which floats atop a calm body of water. She possesses four arms, holding lotus blossoms in two hands, while the others are positioned in mudras of blessing and fearlessness. Above her, four elephants emerge from the clouds, each pouring water from a golden vessel over the deity. This specific iconography, known as Gajalakshmi, signifies abundance, purity, and royal authority. The background features a stylised mountain range, rendered with soft, atmospheric perspective that contrasts with the clear, defined lines of the central figure.
The print includes Sanskrit text at the top and bottom, identifying the subject and providing devotional context. The colour palette is balanced, utilising soft blues for the sky and water, contrasted by the deep red of the goddess's sari and the vivid pink of the lotus petals. The Hindu Art Studio was instrumental in making such religious prints accessible to a wide audience, moving beyond the confines of private shrines into the domestic sphere. This print serves as an example of the intersection between technological advancement in printing and the preservation of traditional religious narratives. The composition is symmetrical and balanced, focusing the viewer's attention on the central figure of the goddess, who remains the primary subject of veneration.
