A detailed 1791 etching by Johann Christian Reinhart, depicting a resting goat in a pastoral Roman setting.
This etching by Johann Christian Reinhart, dated 1791, captures a quiet pastoral scene created during the artist's early years in Rome. Reinhart, a German painter and printmaker, moved to Italy in 1789, where he became deeply engaged with the classical tradition and the depiction of the Roman countryside. This work reflects his technical proficiency in etching, a medium he utilised to explore the textures of animal fur and the rugged terrain of the Italian hills.
The composition features a recumbent goat in the foreground, rendered with precise, varying line weights that define its shaggy coat and alert expression. In the distance, a shepherdess stands near a rocky outcrop, accompanied by other animals. The scene is quiet and observational, avoiding dramatic narrative in favour of a study of rural life. The etching demonstrates the influence of the Dutch masters on Reinhart's early work, particularly in the careful attention to animal anatomy and the naturalistic treatment of the environment.
Reinhart's work from this period is often associated with the transition from late eighteenth-century classicism to the more emotive approaches of the early nineteenth century. His prints were widely collected by contemporaries who valued his ability to combine classical structure with a direct, unadorned observation of nature. The clarity of the line work and the balanced arrangement of the figures demonstrate his command of the etching needle. This print provides a clear example of the pastoral themes that occupied many artists working in Italy at the end of the eighteenth century, offering a glimpse into the artistic interests of the period.
