A striking lithograph by Rudolf Schlichter, capturing the chaotic energy and surreal imagery of the Weimar-era German Expressionist movement.
Rudolf Schlichter, a prominent figure within the German New Objectivity movement, produced this lithograph during a period of intense social and political upheaval in the Weimar Republic. The work displays the characteristic visual language of the era: a chaotic, crowded composition that blends urban architecture with surreal, mythological, and erotic figures. Schlichter often utilised his art to critique the moral decay and societal tensions of post-war Berlin.
The composition is dense, featuring a foreground populated by figures that defy conventional narrative logic. Nude forms, costumed characters, and animals coexist in a dreamlike, almost hallucinatory space. In the background, a stylised cityscape rises, complete with towers and celestial symbols, suggesting a collision between the mundane world and a mystical or esoteric realm. The line work is sharp and energetic, typical of the lithographic medium as employed by German Expressionists to convey urgency and psychological unrest.
Schlichter was closely associated with the Dada movement in Berlin before his shift towards the sharper, more detached observation of New Objectivity. This print captures the transition between these modes of expression. It avoids the polished finish of academic art, opting instead for a raw, graphic quality that forces the viewer to engage with the disjointed elements of the scene. The inclusion of figures that appear both modern and archaic reflects the artist's interest in the occult and the subconscious, themes that frequently appeared in his graphic output during the 1920s. This piece provides a window into the anxieties and the creative ferment of the period, offering a stark, monochromatic vision of a society in flux.
