A study of light and shadow in a Giverny garden, rendered with the characteristic brushwork of American Impressionist Lilla Cabot Perry.
Lilla Cabot Perry, an American painter who spent significant time in France, produced this work during her residency in Giverny. She lived near Claude Monet for several years, and her proximity to the master of Impressionism shaped her approach to light and colour. This painting captures a quiet corner of the garden, featuring a small structure nestled among trees. The composition relies on the interplay between deep shadows and patches of sunlight that filter through the canopy.
Perry employs a technique of broken brushstrokes, a hallmark of the Impressionist movement. She uses these marks to build the form of the trees and the texture of the undergrowth. The palette is dominated by cool blues and purples in the shaded areas, which contrast with the bright, yellow-green tones of the sunlit grass. This method of colour application creates a sense of movement and atmospheric depth, typical of the late nineteenth-century plein air tradition.
Unlike some of her contemporaries who focused on grand vistas, Perry often turned her attention to the intimate details of the garden environment. The small building provides a geometric anchor to the organic, flowing lines of the foliage. By focusing on the specific quality of light at a particular time of day, she documents the changing conditions of the French countryside. This piece reflects her technical proficiency and her ability to translate the visual experience of nature into a structured, painterly form. It remains a clear example of the American adaptation of French Impressionist principles, demonstrating how Perry integrated European techniques with her own observational style.
