A portrait by Leonardo da Vinci's pupil, Marco d'Oggiono, featuring a young woman holding a bowl of cherries against a dark background.
Marco d'Oggiono, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, produced this portrait during the late fifteenth century. The work displays the stylistic influence of his master, particularly in the soft modelling of the subject's features and the use of a dark, atmospheric background. The young woman is depicted in a half-length pose, holding a bowl of cherries, a motif often associated with innocence or the fleeting nature of youth in Renaissance iconography.
The subject wears a period-appropriate bodice with red sleeves and white undergarments, fastened with black ribbons. Her hair is long, wavy, and adorned with a simple wreath of leaves, which adds a classical touch to the composition. The lighting is focused on the face and hands, creating a gentle contrast against the deep shadows of the background. This technique, known as sfumato, allows for smooth transitions between colours and tones, a hallmark of the Milanese school during this period.
As a follower of Leonardo, d'Oggiono adopted many of the technical approaches common in the studio, including the careful observation of light and the psychological engagement of the sitter. The painting remains a clear example of the portraiture style favoured in Lombardy at the turn of the sixteenth century. The focus is on the quiet composure of the figure, whose gaze meets the viewer with a sense of calm. The inclusion of the fruit bowl serves as a tactile element, drawing the eye to the hands and the delicate way they interact with the objects. This print captures the subtle textures of the fabric and the soft skin tones achieved by the artist, providing a clear view of the technical skill involved in the original panel painting.
