A 1932 portrait by John French Sloan, featuring a woman posed at a piano, rendered in his characteristic cross-hatched tempera technique.
John French Sloan, a central figure of the Ashcan School, produced this portrait in 1932. The work demonstrates his later experimentation with tempera and overglaze techniques, which allowed for a distinct textural quality. The subject is positioned with her back to the piano, her arms resting atop the instrument. Her gaze meets the viewer directly, creating a sense of intimacy within the domestic setting.
Sloan employs a cross-hatched application of colour, which builds form through rhythmic, linear marks rather than smooth blending. This technique creates a sense of kinetic energy across the surface of the painting. The palette is warm, dominated by golden yellows, ochres, and deep browns, which contrast with the cooler tones of the piano keys and the small floral arrangement. The composition is tightly cropped, focusing attention on the figure and her immediate environment. The piano keys provide a strong horizontal element that anchors the figure, while the sheet music behind her adds a vertical counterpoint.
Unlike his earlier, more gritty urban scenes of New York life, this work reflects a shift in Sloan's practice toward studio-based portraiture and technical exploration. The use of tempera with overglaze was a deliberate choice to achieve a luminous, almost translucent effect, reminiscent of Renaissance methods. This approach allowed him to manipulate light and shadow with greater precision. The figure's expression is composed, suggesting a moment of quiet reflection. The painting remains a clear example of Sloan's technical rigour and his ability to capture the character of his subjects through a unique, highly individualised application of paint.
