A refined woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicting two women in traditional attire walking by a stream, showcasing the elegance of the bijin-ga genre.
This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts two women in a serene outdoor setting. The composition follows the conventions of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the representation of beautiful women. Koryūsai, a former samurai who turned to printmaking, was known for his refined line work and his ability to capture the subtle interactions between figures.
The younger woman, dressed in a kimono adorned with crane motifs, walks alongside an elder attendant. The attendant wears a more subdued, striped garment. Their postures suggest a quiet, rhythmic movement as they traverse the bank of a stream. The background is minimal, featuring a simple bamboo fence and cloud outlines, which directs the viewer's attention to the figures and the patterns of their clothing.
Koryūsai was a prolific artist during the mid-Edo period. He is particularly recognised for his hashira-e (pillar prints), though this work demonstrates his skill with larger formats. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted oranges, and greys. This choice of colour allows the fine details of the fabric patterns to emerge without overwhelming the viewer. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the time, where elegance was found in the balance of form and the careful observation of daily life. The artist's signature and the series title are visible in the upper right and lower left corners, typical of the period's print production. This piece offers a glimpse into the fashion and social customs of the eighteenth-century urban class in Japan.
