A nineteenth-century lithograph depicting a family gathering wood in a snow-covered field, rendered in a soft, tonal style.
This lithograph by Bernard Romain Julien captures a quiet, rural scene during the winter months. The composition focuses on a family unit navigating a snow-covered field, their figures rendered with careful attention to the weight of their burdens and the cold environment. The artist employs a soft, tonal approach characteristic of the 'manière de crayon' lithographic technique, which mimics the appearance of charcoal or chalk drawings on paper. The figures are positioned in the foreground, carrying bundles of wood, while a secondary group with a pack animal recedes into the middle distance. The trees, stripped of their leaves, frame the scene and provide a sense of scale against the vast, pale expanse of the snow.
Julien was a prolific lithographer who often collaborated with publishers like François Delarue to produce instructional drawing manuals and genre prints. This work, part of a series titled 'La Campagne', reflects the nineteenth-century interest in rural life and the daily struggles of the peasantry. The print demonstrates the technical capabilities of lithography to convey atmospheric depth and subtle shifts in light. By using a limited palette of greys and whites, the artist creates a sense of stillness and isolation. The focus remains on the human element within the natural world, documenting a moment of labour in a harsh season. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences of the period, where the depiction of everyday life was elevated through skilled printmaking techniques. The attention to texture, from the rough bark of the fallen logs to the heavy fabric of the figures' clothing, demonstrates the artist's ability to translate tactile qualities into a printed medium.
