This watercolour depicts the coastal settlement of Anjer on the island of Java during the mid-nineteenth century. Charles William Meredith van de Velde, a Dutch naval officer and cartographer, produced this work during his travels in the Dutch East Indies. The composition follows the conventions of colonial topographical art, prioritising a clear, panoramic view of the harbour and the surrounding tropical environment.

In the foreground, the shoreline features a group of figures engaged in fishing, their forms rendered with precise, small brushstrokes. To the left, two individuals stand on the grassy bank, observing the scene. The middle ground contains a collection of modest dwellings and structures, sheltered by a cluster of tall palm trees.
