A detailed seventeenth-century topographical drawing of Middelburg, capturing the Dutch city skyline and surrounding rural fields in ink and wash.
This drawing by Johannes Goedaert captures a panoramic view of the Dutch city of Middelburg. Executed in pen and brown ink with grey wash, the work demonstrates the precision typical of seventeenth-century Dutch topographical studies. The composition is divided into distinct horizontal zones: the foreground features textured, scrubby vegetation, while the middle ground reveals a patchwork of agricultural fields and small farmsteads. The distant city skyline, punctuated by the recognisable silhouette of the Abbey tower, sits low on the horizon, allowing the expansive sky to dominate the upper portion of the frame.
Goedaert, better known for his scientific observations of insects and natural history, here applies a similar rigour to the built and natural environment. The use of wash creates subtle gradations of light, suggesting the atmospheric conditions of the Zeeland province. The clouds are rendered with soft, rounded forms, providing a sense of volume that contrasts with the linear detail of the fields below. Birds are scattered across the sky, adding a sense of scale and movement to the quiet scene.
This work reflects the period interest in documenting the specific character of Dutch towns and their surrounding rural areas. By maintaining a wide, low perspective, the artist invites the viewer to survey the relationship between the urban centre and the cultivated land that supports it. The lack of heavy shading allows the architectural details of the city to remain clear, even at a distance. This print offers a view into the historical topography of the Netherlands, preserved through the careful hand of a versatile artist who balanced scientific curiosity with artistic documentation.
