A detailed watercolour view of Malaga by French artist Adrien Dauzats, capturing the city's cathedral and coastline in the 1830s.
Adrien Dauzats, a French painter known for his travels through the Middle East and Spain, produced this watercolour during his journey to the Iberian Peninsula in the 1830s. The work depicts the coastal city of Malaga, captured from an elevated northern vantage point. The composition is dominated by the cathedral, which rises above the surrounding urban fabric, while the Mediterranean Sea stretches along the left edge of the frame. The distant mountains provide a rugged backdrop to the sun-drenched plains.
Dauzats employs a restrained palette of ochre, sepia, and muted blue to convey the atmospheric conditions of the southern Spanish climate. His technique relies on thin washes of watercolour, allowing the underlying graphite sketch to define the architectural forms and the contours of the harbour. The artist demonstrates a keen eye for topographical accuracy, balancing the structural details of the city with the expansive horizon. This piece reflects the nineteenth-century interest in travel and the documentation of foreign locales, a pursuit that often informed the work of Orientalist and Romantic painters of the period.
The work is notable for its clarity and the economy of its brushwork. Dauzats avoids excessive detail, choosing instead to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the city rooftops and the coastline. The presence of small, gestural figures near the water indicates the scale of the port, providing a sense of life within the quiet, sun-baked scene. This print captures the specific character of Malaga as it appeared to a European traveller in the early nineteenth century, offering a window into the historical appearance of the city before the rapid urban expansion of later decades.
