A detailed seventeenth-century drawing by Jan Worst, depicting the dramatic cliffs and waterfall at Tivoli using pen and grey wash.
This drawing by Jan Worst captures the dramatic topography of Tivoli, a location frequently visited by Dutch artists during the seventeenth century. The composition focuses on the steep cliffs and the cascading water, which dominates the right side of the frame. Worst employs a combination of fine pen lines and fluid grey washes to define the architectural forms of the buildings perched atop the rock face, as well as the rugged texture of the stone itself.
The artist uses wash to create depth and shadow, particularly in the recesses of the cliffside and the structures above. The water is rendered with light, directional strokes that suggest movement and volume without excessive detail. The buildings, typical of Italian vernacular architecture, are depicted with a sense of structural solidity that contrasts with the organic, irregular forms of the natural terrain. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the immediate interaction between the built environment and the geological features of the site.
Jan Worst, a Dutch artist who travelled to Italy, produced works that reflect the tradition of the 'Italianate' style popular among his contemporaries. This piece functions as a study of light and form, demonstrating a clear interest in the specific character of the Roman countryside. The use of grey wash provides a monochromatic palette that emphasises the tonal variations across the scene, from the dark, dense shadows under the cliff to the lighter, more transparent areas of the falling water. The drawing remains a precise observation of a specific site, capturing the scale of the waterfall in relation to the human-made structures above.
