A detailed graphite and wash drawing of the historic Waag building on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam, capturing the architecture and market activity of the era.
This drawing by Anthonie van Teijn captures the Waag, a historic building situated on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam. The artist employs a combination of graphite and wash to define the architectural form of the structure, which originally functioned as a city gate before its conversion into a weigh house. The composition focuses on the building's distinctive towers and steep roofs, rendered with a focus on light and shadow to create a sense of volume.
In the foreground, the artist depicts the daily activity of the market. Stalls with canvas coverings are arranged before the Waag, and small figures are scattered across the square. These elements provide a sense of scale and document the urban life of the period. The use of wash allows for soft transitions between the illuminated surfaces of the building and the shaded areas, lending a atmospheric quality to the scene. The tree on the right side of the frame adds a vertical element that balances the horizontal spread of the market stalls.
Van Teijn, a Dutch artist active during the late nineteenth century, often documented the changing urban environment of Amsterdam. His work reflects a traditional approach to topographical drawing, prioritising clarity of form and historical accuracy. This piece offers a view into the past of one of Amsterdam's most recognisable squares, capturing the intersection of civic architecture and public commerce. The muted palette and the delicate application of wash are characteristic of the period's interest in documenting city life through a romanticised lens, focusing on the texture of stone and the play of light across historical facades.
