A detailed sixteenth-century topographical drawing of Rome, capturing the Tiber River and Castel Sant' Angelo with precise pen and ink work.
This topographical study by the Flemish artist Antoni van den Wijngaerde captures a panoramic view of Rome during the mid-sixteenth century. The composition focuses on the Tiber River as it curves past the Castel Sant' Angelo, the former mausoleum of Hadrian that served as a fortress for the papacy. Van den Wijngaerde, who travelled extensively across Europe to document cities for the Spanish court, employed a precise, observational approach to his draughtsmanship.
The drawing utilises a delicate application of pen and brown ink, supplemented by subtle brown washes to define the architectural massing and the undulating terrain. The artist captures the urban density of the period, showing the cluster of buildings along the riverbank and the fortified walls that defined the city's perimeter. A single tree on the left provides a vertical anchor, guiding the viewer's eye across the horizontal expanse of the river towards the distant hills.
Unlike the idealised cityscapes produced by many of his contemporaries, this work prioritises accuracy and documentation. The lines are thin and controlled, reflecting the artist's training as a cartographer and illustrator. The paper retains its original tonal quality, with the ink having faded slightly over the centuries to a soft sepia. This piece offers a glimpse into the topographical practices of the sixteenth century, where the artist acted as both a reporter and an observer of the changing urban environment. The work is held in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, where it is valued for its contribution to the historical record of Rome's architectural development.
