A detailed topographical drawing by Guilliam du Gardijn, depicting the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla in Rome with a focus on architectural form.
This drawing by Guilliam du Gardijn captures the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. Executed in graphite and grey wash, the work reflects the interest of Dutch artists in the Italian environment during the seventeenth century. The composition is anchored by a large, prominent rock in the foreground, which provides a sense of scale against the massive, crumbling brick structures of the ancient Roman thermal complex.
Du Gardijn employs a delicate hand, using light washes to suggest the textures of weathered masonry and the encroaching vegetation that clings to the ruins. The lines are precise yet fluid, characteristic of the observational sketches produced by Northern European artists on their travels through Italy. The artist focuses on the interplay of light and shadow across the uneven surfaces of the architecture, creating a sense of atmospheric depth without relying on heavy contrast.
This piece offers a glimpse into the practice of sketching on-site, where the artist sought to document the physical reality of classical antiquity. The inclusion of the foreground rock serves to frame the view, guiding the eye toward the central archways and the secondary ruins visible in the distance. The work is devoid of excessive ornamentation, prioritising the structural integrity of the subject matter. It remains a clear example of the topographical tradition, where the artist acts as a recorder of history and geography. The verso of the original sheet contains a further study of classical ruins, suggesting that this drawing was part of a larger collection of sketches compiled during the artist's time in Rome. The muted palette and restrained technique allow the viewer to focus on the architectural forms and the quiet, desolate quality of the site.
