A precise eighteenth-century topographical drawing by Dirk Valkenburg, documenting the Surimombo plantation in Suriname with pen, ink, and grey wash.
This drawing by Dirk Valkenburg, titled Gezicht op de plantage Surimombo, offers a precise, observational record of colonial infrastructure in Suriname during the early eighteenth century. Valkenburg, a Dutch painter and draughtsman, travelled to the colony in 1706 at the request of the plantation owner Jonas Witsen. His task was to document the estate, resulting in a series of works that provide rare visual evidence of the period.
The composition is structured with a clear, rational perspective. To the left, the edge of a structure frames the scene, drawing the eye toward the central wooden building and the surrounding work area. In the foreground, timber logs lie scattered on the ground, accompanied by wooden trestles, suggesting an active site of construction or maintenance. The artist employs fine pen lines to define the architectural forms and the texture of the wood, while grey wash is applied to create depth in the sky and the foliage of the distant trees. The clouds are rendered with soft, layered washes, providing a sense of atmosphere that contrasts with the rigid, linear quality of the man-made structures.
Below the image, a handwritten inscription in Dutch identifies the location: 'Een gesigt op de Plantagie Surimombo, als men voor 't woonhuys staat' (A view of the plantation Surimombo, as one stands before the dwelling house). This text confirms the documentary intent of the work. The drawing avoids decorative embellishment, focusing instead on the functional reality of the plantation environment. It captures the stark, utilitarian nature of colonial expansion, reflecting the specific interests of the Dutch merchant class who commissioned such records to monitor their overseas investments. The work remains a valuable historical document for understanding the physical organisation of Surinamese plantations in the early 1700s.
