A detailed eighteenth-century etching depicting the Place Louis XV in Paris, capturing the architectural symmetry and daily life of the square.
This etching by Jeanne Françoise Ozanne depicts the Place Louis XV in Paris, known today as the Place de la Concorde. The composition captures the architectural symmetry of the square, which was designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel. At the centre stands the equestrian statue of Louis XV, a feature that defined the space before its removal during the French Revolution. The print provides a clear view of the surrounding buildings, including the colonnaded facades that characterise the site.
Ozanne employs a precise, linear technique typical of eighteenth-century topographical printmaking. The foreground is populated with small figures, carriages, and horses, which provide a sense of scale and daily activity within the urban environment. The sky is rendered with subtle horizontal hatching, creating a sense of atmosphere without distracting from the architectural details. The work functions as a historical record of Parisian urban planning during the reign of Louis XV.
Jeanne Françoise Ozanne was a member of a notable family of engravers. Her work often focused on maritime subjects and urban views, reflecting the technical rigour of the period. This particular print demonstrates her ability to balance the rigid geometry of neoclassical architecture with the fluid movement of life in the square. The etching is executed with a fine needle, allowing for the crisp definition of the building cornices and the equestrian monument. It offers a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of the mid-eighteenth century, where order and proportion were paramount in public design. The print remains a valuable document for those interested in the history of Parisian architecture and the development of the city before the radical changes of the late eighteenth century.
