A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jan Veenhuysen showing the Oude Stadsherberg in the Amsterdam harbour.
This etching by Jan Veenhuysen depicts the Oude Stadsherberg, or Old City Inn, which once occupied a prominent position in the harbour of Amsterdam. During the seventeenth century, this building functioned as a primary point of arrival for travellers entering the city by water. The print captures the architectural character of the inn, complete with its chimneys and gabled roof, set against the busy maritime activity of the IJ.
Veenhuysen employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of Dutch topographical printmaking from this period. The composition balances the solid structure of the inn with the verticality of the masts in the background, providing a clear sense of the scale and function of the harbour. A wooden drawbridge and pier extend into the water, where small boats and figures are rendered with careful attention to detail. The inclusion of text at the top, identifying the location in both Dutch and French, suggests this work was intended for a wider audience interested in the geography and urban development of Amsterdam.
The print offers a glimpse into the daily operations of a major European port. The smoke rising from the chimney and the presence of various vessels indicate a site of constant movement and commerce. As a document of seventeenth-century urban life, the work provides a record of structures that have long since disappeared from the Amsterdam waterfront. The clarity of the lines and the structured perspective allow the viewer to observe the spatial relationship between the inn and the surrounding water, reflecting the importance of maritime infrastructure to the prosperity of the city during the Dutch Golden Age.
