A detailed 1883 graphite study of the Grote Markt in Groningen, capturing the historic architecture and daily life of the Dutch city.
This graphite drawing by Willem de Haas Hemken captures the Grote Markt in Groningen as it appeared in 1883. The work functions as a documentary record of the city centre, focusing on the ornate facades of the historic buildings and the towering presence of the Martinitoren in the background. Hemken employs a precise, observational technique, using fine lines to delineate the architectural details of the gabled houses and the street-level activity.
The composition is structured around the perspective of the street, drawing the eye toward the distant tower. Figures are scattered throughout the scene, providing a sense of scale and daily life in the late nineteenth century. A horse-drawn carriage and pedestrians in period attire populate the square, grounding the architectural study in a specific temporal context. The artist has included handwritten annotations in the upper portion of the sheet, likely colour notes or reminders for a subsequent painting or more finished work. These marks offer a glimpse into the artist's working process.
As a Dutch artist active during the latter half of the nineteenth century, Hemken produced numerous topographical studies of urban environments. This particular drawing demonstrates his ability to balance technical accuracy with a sense of atmosphere. The paper shows signs of age, including a central fold, which is consistent with its history as a working sketch from the artist's studio. The print captures the subtle variations in graphite pressure, from the light, gestural outlines of the distant buildings to the firmer, more defined strokes used for the foreground architecture and the gas lamp. It is a quiet, measured observation of urban life, free from unnecessary embellishment, and provides a clear window into the historical character of Groningen.
