An atmospheric etching by Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller depicting the historic Dijkpoort gatehouse in Hattem, rendered with fine tonal detail.
Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller, a member of the Amsterdam Impressionist circle, frequently turned his attention to the quiet, historic corners of the Netherlands. This etching depicts the Dijkpoort in Hattem, a medieval gatehouse that served as a defensive structure. Wijsmuller captures the architectural weight of the stone tower, contrasting its dark, imposing mass against the lighter, atmospheric sky. The composition draws the viewer through the archway, where the perspective leads the eye toward the distant street beyond.
Technically, the work demonstrates the artist's command of the etching needle. He employs varied hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the masonry, the tiled roofs of the flanking houses, and the soft shadows cast upon the cobblestone path. Two figures are positioned in the middle ground, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the historic setting. The inclusion of a small spire in the background adds a secondary point of interest, balancing the verticality of the gatehouse.
Wijsmuller was known for his atmospheric approach to Dutch townscapes. He avoided rigid, overly precise documentation in favour of capturing the mood of a location. The play of light and shadow here suggests a late afternoon or overcast day, common in the Dutch climate. This print reflects the broader interest among late nineteenth-century artists in preserving the character of older Dutch towns as industrialisation began to alter the urban environment. The work is a study in tonal values, relying on the density of lines rather than colour to convey the depth and volume of the scene. It remains a representative example of the graphic output of the period, where the artist sought to translate the fleeting qualities of light into the permanent medium of the copper plate.
