A detailed topographical drawing by Barend Klotz, capturing the Bospoort gatehouse and defensive moat in Bergen op Zoom using ink and wash.
This drawing by Barend Klotz depicts the Bospoort, a fortified gate in the Dutch town of Bergen op Zoom. Klotz, a draughtsman active during the late eighteenth century, specialised in capturing the architectural and defensive features of the Netherlands. His work provides a clear record of the town's fortifications, which were essential to its strategic position.
The composition focuses on the gatehouse and the surrounding defensive structures, including the drawbridge and the water-filled moat. Klotz employs a combination of fine ink lines and grey wash to define the textures of the masonry and the earthen ramparts. The use of wash allows for a subtle gradation of tone, which creates a sense of depth across the scene. The foreground features a wooden palisade along the water, leading the eye toward the gatehouse. The sky remains largely unworked, a common practice in topographical studies of the period, which prioritised the accurate representation of the built environment over atmospheric effects.
Klotz's approach is methodical and precise. He documents the specific architectural details of the Bospoort, including its gabled roof and the mechanical elements of the bridge. Such drawings were often produced for collectors or as part of larger surveys of Dutch towns. The work reflects the period's interest in local history and the documentation of civic infrastructure. By focusing on the interplay between the man-made structures and the natural topography of the moat, Klotz provides a view of Bergen op Zoom that is both descriptive and historically informative. The drawing remains a useful reference for understanding the defensive layout of the town before the significant urban changes of the nineteenth century.
