Caspar van Wittel, also known as Gaspare Vanvitelli, was a Dutch draughtsman and painter who spent the majority of his career in Italy. He is widely recognised for his contributions to the development of the veduta, or view painting, which became a staple of the Grand Tour. This drawing depicts the Abbey of Grottaferrata, situated in the Alban Hills near Rome. The composition demonstrates his characteristic approach to topographical subjects, balancing architectural precision with the natural environment.

The foreground features a stone trough, rendered with careful attention to shadow and form through the application of grey wash. The trees frame the scene, guiding the eye toward the abbey in the distance.
