A detailed etching of a saddled horse from the Dutch Golden Age, capturing the animal with precise, calligraphic lines.
This etching by Pieter Cornelisz. Verbeeck captures a saddled horse from a rear perspective. Verbeeck, a Dutch painter and etcher active during the seventeenth century, specialised in depictions of animals, particularly horses. His work often reflects the interest of his contemporaries in the anatomical study of livestock and domestic creatures, which were common subjects in the art of the Dutch Golden Age.
The composition is minimal, focusing entirely on the form of the horse. The artist uses economical, calligraphic lines to define the musculature of the hindquarters and the texture of the saddle. The background remains largely empty, a characteristic choice that directs the viewer's attention to the subject's posture and the simple tethering post to the right. The etching technique allows for a directness of expression, where the spontaneity of the initial sketch is preserved in the final print.
Verbeeck's approach to this subject is observational rather than narrative. He avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to capture the physical presence of the animal through precise mark-making. The shadow cast beneath the horse provides a sense of grounding, while the slight tilt of the head suggests a moment of stillness. This print offers a glimpse into the studio practices of the period, where artists frequently produced small-scale studies of animals for use in larger compositions or as independent works for collectors interested in naturalistic subjects. The work is a clear example of the technical proficiency found in Dutch printmaking during this era, where the medium was used to explore both the mundane and the specific with equal rigour.
