An architectural elevation drawing by Anthony Ziesenis, depicting the entrance facade of the Amsterdam Nautical Training School in precise ink and wash.
This architectural drawing by Anthony Ziesenis depicts the facade of the Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart, or the Nautical Training School, in Amsterdam. Ziesenis, a Dutch architect and sculptor, was active during the late eighteenth century, a period when Neoclassical principles dominated urban design in the Netherlands. The drawing presents a formal elevation of the school entrance, demonstrating the precise draughtsmanship required for municipal construction projects of the era.
The composition centres on a robust arched doorway, flanked by rusticated masonry. Above the lintel, which bears the inscription Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart, sits a sculptural group. This allegorical figure, likely representing navigation or maritime commerce, is accompanied by nautical motifs. The use of grey wash provides a sense of volume and depth, allowing the viewer to perceive the three-dimensional qualities of the stone carving and the recessed door frame. A scale bar at the bottom of the sheet indicates the technical nature of the work, serving as a guide for builders or stone masons.
Ziesenis was known for his contributions to the urban aesthetic of Amsterdam, often working on public buildings and private residences. His approach to architectural rendering reflects the disciplined training of the time, prioritising clarity, symmetry, and structural logic. The drawing is a record of the institutional architecture that defined the city's maritime identity. By documenting the facade in such detail, Ziesenis captured the intersection of civic pride and functional design. The work remains a valuable reference for those interested in the history of Dutch architecture and the specific aesthetic standards applied to educational institutions in the late eighteenth century.
