A formal portrait of General Joseph Bloomfield by Charles Willson Peale, capturing the subject in his military uniform during the American Revolutionary era.
Charles Willson Peale, a central figure in American portraiture during the Revolutionary era, painted this likeness of Joseph Bloomfield around 1777. Bloomfield, who served as a captain in the Third New Jersey Regiment before rising to the rank of brigadier general, is depicted here in his military uniform. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture, focusing on the subject's status and professional identity.
Peale employs a controlled palette, favouring muted earth tones for the uniform and background, which allows the pale blue sash to draw the eye. The lighting is soft, modelling the subject's features with precision while maintaining a sense of formal dignity. The background features a draped curtain, a common device in portraiture of the period to suggest an interior setting of some consequence. Peale's technique is characterised by smooth brushwork and a clear, objective approach to the sitter's likeness.
This work reflects the artist's role in documenting the military and political figures of the American Revolution. Peale was not only a painter but also a naturalist and museum founder, and his portraits often possess a documentary quality. The sitter, Joseph Bloomfield, later became the Governor of New Jersey. This portrait captures him during his early military career, providing a visual record of the men who shaped the early American republic. The print reproduction maintains the tonal balance of the original oil painting, ensuring the subtle gradations of the uniform and the soft skin tones are preserved. It is a representative example of the portrait style that defined the American colonial and post-revolutionary period, prioritising clarity, realism, and a restrained aesthetic.
